In this article, we’ll explain what Mark’ennovy MYLO contact lenses are, how they work, what makes them stand out from other myopia management options. Read on to find out whether Mark’ennovy MYLO contact lenses could be a suitable option for your child.

What are Mark’ennovy MYLO contact lenses?

Mark’ennovy MYLO is a monthly disposable soft contact lens specifically designed for myopia management. This contact lens is the result of a collaboration between Mark’ennovy and the Brien Holden Vision Institute (BHVI) – a world-renowned organization in vision-related research and development.

MYLO combines Mark’ennovy’s own silicone hydrogel material with BHVI’s patented extended depth of focus (EDOF) technology, which is clinically proven to slow the progression of near-sightedness (myopia) in children. Aside from myopia control, EDOF technology supports comfortable vision at a range of distances. The lens is available in a wide range of parameters, which enables eye care professionals to optimize the vision, comfort, and fitting for each child.

How do Mark’ennovy MYLO contact lenses work?

Standard single vision lenses have a simple optical design, where light passing through the lens is focused directly onto the retina, the light sensitive layer at the back of the eye. This corrects blurred vision effectively, but it does not influence how the eye grows over time. In other words, single vision lenses do not protect against the worsening of myopia.

In contrast, MYLO lenses use a specialized design known as extended depth of focus (EDOF), that aims to correct vision and slow myopia progression at the same time. With EDOF optics, the lens power changes gradually across the surface of the lens rather than shifting abruptly between zones. This creates a comfortable wearing experience and a continuous range of focus, allowing objects to remain clear over different viewing distances.

MYLO lenses take EDOF another step further to control the progression of myopia. By altering how light behaves within the eye, MYLO lenses also reduce the visual cues that drive excessive eye growth (axial elongation) – the underlying cause of myopia.

What are the features of the Mark’ennovy MYLO lens?

As a monthly replacement lens, the same pair of lenses is worn each day, cleaned and stored overnight, and replaced with a fresh pair every month. This equates to fewer lenses used and less waste. Monthly disposable lenses are suitable for children who are comfortable with a cleaning routine, as daily cleaning and proper storage is required. Following the recommended lens care routine is important to maintain the vision and comfort of the lenses, and minimize the risk of infection.

A key feature of Mark’ennovy MYLO contact lenses is their high level of customization. Unlike the majority of soft contact lenses that are available only in standard sizes and a limited range of prescriptions, MYLO comes in a wide range of parameters for a more precise fit. Both the sizing characteristics and the prescription can be individually tailored to bring out the best possible vision and comfort. Additionally, this helps support children with different eye shapes, or children with high amounts of myopia and/or astigmatism.

MYLO lenses are made from Mark’ennovy’s silicone hydrogel material (Filcon 5B), which allows good oxygen flow to the eyes while remaining soft, moist, and flexible. These characteristics improve day-to-day comfort, and ensure the lens is easy to handle, especially for younger children.

Should my child wear Mark’ennovy MYLO contact lenses or glasses?

Children with myopia need either contact lenses or glasses (spectacles) to correct blurred distance vision. Both options can also help slow myopia progression through specially designed lenses.

Deciding between Mark’ennovy MYLO and glasses often comes down to lifestyle, comfort, and personal preference. Some children even alternate between the two on different days, depending on their activities.

Mark’ennovy MYLO lenses give children freedom from glasses. Contact lenses are especially useful for kids who play sport or have active hobbies, as they avoid the inconvenience and risk of glasses breaking.

Even for children who aren’t heavily involved in sport, wearing contact lenses can increase confidence and satisfaction with vision compared to glasses.1 Contact lenses can also be more convenient for everyday wear since they don’t fog up, slip down, or limit peripheral vision.

The availability of myopia control treatments for children can vary by country. Contact lenses can be a great option for kids of many ages, even if it’s something you haven’t considered before. Ask your child’s optometrist or eye doctor whether a trial of Mark’ennovy MYLO lenses is available.

Information

Besides soft contact lenses, other effective options for myopia management include myopia control glasses, orthokeratology lenses, atropine eye drops, and repeated low-level red light (RLRL) therapy.

Do Mark’ennovy MYLO contact lenses really slow myopia?

The Brien Holden Vision Institute’s extended depth of focus design used in MYLO has been studied as a myopia treatment in children since 2019.2 This same design is also used in other contact lenses, including SEED 1dayPure EDOF, a daily disposable soft contact lens developed for managing myopia and presbyopia.

Newer research has studied the performance of the MYLO lens directly over several years. Together, these studies have helped build an understanding of the effect and safety of MYLO for managing myopia in children.

Highlighted below are some key facts about the effectiveness of Mark’ennovy MYLO contact lenses.

  • A clinical trial in China found that lenses which used the same design as MYLO slowed prescription change and eye growth by about a quarter over 2 years.2
  • A clinical trial in Spain found that MYLO lenses reduced prescription change and eye growth in children with myopia, by almost a half over 4 years.3,4
  • A clinical trial in Spain found that MYLO lenses reduced prescription change and eye growth in children with myopia and astigmatism, by about a half over 2 years.5

These results suggest that MYLO lenses can be a potentially effective solution for managing myopia progression in children with and without astigmatism.

Is the vision in Mark’ennovy MYLO contact lenses as good as regular contacts?

MYLO lenses are designed to support clear and comfortable vision at all distances, allowing children to see well during everyday activities.

Although MYLO lenses use an advanced design, the optics are blended smoothly across the lens surface. This gradual transition helps reduce the likelihood of unwanted visual effects such as ghosting or haloes. Multiple studies have shown that EDOF contact lenses provide clarity that is similar to regular contact lenses, with minimal impact on the eye’s natural focusing ability and coordination.2,6,7

As with any new prescription, a short adjustment period can be expected. Some children may notice mild dryness or brief fluctuations in vision shortly after putting the lenses on. These effects are usually temporary and tend to resolve once the lenses settle in.

Information

Children report high levels of satisfaction with MYLO lenses, and after 1 month of wear children rate their lenses at least 9 out of 10.3,6 This indicates that most children adapt well to the lenses.

When should my child wear their Mark’ennovy MYLO contact lenses?

The recommended wearing schedule for MYLO lenses, according to a clinical trial, is at least 10 hours per day, at least 6 days per week.3 It has been shown that kids who wear the lenses full-time (≥6 days per week) are more likely to have slower myopia progression.2

In practical terms, it is ideal to wear the lenses all the time and every day, except when sleeping or showering. If contact lenses are not able to be worn at a given time, then children should wear their glasses with the correct prescription.

Wearing time is very important for achieving the best treatment results. This rule is the same whether the treatment involves contact lenses or glasses – they work best when worn full-time and every day.8 If the lenses are not being worn or being worn for a short period of time each day, then the level of effectiveness will likely be reduced.

What you can do next

MYLO contact lenses can be an effective and personalized treatment solution for managing progressive myopia, with the ability to support a wide range of children’s eye types. Contact lenses also offer big benefits for children in their confidence and ability to participate in activities for school and sport.

Ask your optometrist or eye doctor to find out whether Mark’ennovy MYLO contact lenses are available in your country. They can also determine your child’s suitability and answer any questions you may have on kids and contact lenses.
